Venezuela’s Interim Leader Describes Amnesty Law as a Turning Point

(MENAFN) Venezuela’s interim president highlighted the landmark nature of a newly enacted amnesty measure, portraying it as a decisive move toward easing political divisions that have persisted for decades.

"Alongside the political sectors, I signed the Amnesty Law for Democratic Coexistence, unanimously approved in the National Assembly; opening the door for Venezuela to reunite and coexist in peace and tolerance, with human rights, respect, and understanding at its core," Rodriguez said on Thursday.

The legislation is designed to pardon individuals who were prosecuted or convicted for politically related offenses dating back to 1999. However, it explicitly excludes those accused of grave crimes, including involvement in armed actions or offenses directed against the state.

"This legal instrument is hope for the country. We are beginning a new stage of peace, recognition, and coexistence among all Venezuelans, guaranteeing the future of our children and young people," she said.

The passage of the law comes amid significant political developments. Following months of escalating tensions, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was captured on Jan. 3, setting off a chain of events that included Rodriguez’s swearing-in as interim president, amendments to the country’s principal oil legislation, and the release of several political detainees.

Supporters of the measure describe it as an effort to foster dialogue and stability, while maintaining limitations intended to prevent impunity for serious offenses.
