Mexico Comments on Absence of Palestinian Representation in Board of Peace
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, she underscored Mexico’s recognition of Palestinian statehood and argued that any initiative addressing the conflict must include both principal parties.
“Given that we recognize Palestine as a state, it’s important that both states, Israel and Palestine, participate. It isn’t set up that way,” she said at a press conference.
Instead of assuming full membership, Mexico will take part in a limited capacity. She explained that the country’s ambassador to the United Nations will attend the board’s proceedings as an observer.
“They invited us to attend as observers; if we were not going to participate, then to attend as observers. And together with the foreign minister, we decided that our ambassador to the United Nations would attend as an observer,” she added.
Her comments were delivered ahead of the board’s first official meeting scheduled for Thursday in Washington, DC.
Sheinbaum has repeatedly voiced support for the Palestinian cause, characterizing Israel’s military campaign in Gaza as genocide and advocating for a negotiated two-state solution as the basis for lasting peace.
The formation of the US-led body was announced by Donald Trump despite the United States having supplied at least $21.7 billion in military assistance to Israel since the outbreak of the Israeli-Hamas war on Oct. 7, 2023 — a conflict in which more than 71,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to figures cited by officials.
