Venezuela, U.S. Move Toward Renewed Diplomatic Action
The encounter was hosted at the Miraflores presidential palace, where both sides talked about “the work agenda between the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the United States,” according to Venezuela’s Communications and Information Minister Miguel Pérez Pirela on the social media platform X.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil announced that Rodríguez designated Félix Plasencia to serve as the country’s official diplomatic envoy to the United States. Plasencia and his delegation are expected to head to Washington in the near future to begin their duties. Gil said that in addition to diplomatic postings, the discussions covered mutual concerns such as energy cooperation and political and economic matters.
According to the U.S. Embassy in Venezuela, Dogu’s talks also included National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez and emphasized a three-stage strategy that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio outlined for Venezuela’s future: stabilization, economic recovery and reconciliation, and eventual transition. The embassy noted this framework in a post on X following the meeting.
This high-level engagement follows months of tension and a significant shift in Venezuela’s political landscape after the United States captured President Nicolás Maduro on January 3.
That event has been followed by several major developments in Venezuela, including Rodríguez being sworn in as interim president, amendments to the nation’s key oil legislation, and the release of some political detainees.
