Russia Commits to Providing Full Support for Venezuela
During a Monday phone call, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil and Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov addressed what they characterized as ongoing hostilities and blatant breaches of international law unfolding in Caribbean waters.
In a Telegram statement, Gil confirmed that Moscow has committed to providing complete diplomatic support for Venezuela, particularly through interventions at the United Nations Security Council.
"Foreign Minister Lavrov firmly expressed Russia's solidarity with the people of Venezuela and with President Nicolas Maduro Moros and reaffirmed his full support in the face of hostilities against our country," he said.
Moscow delivered a sharp rebuke concerning the American naval deployment, warning that Washington's maneuvers carry serious ramifications for regional security and represent a direct menace to international maritime commerce.
The diplomatic coordination follows Trump's boastful declaration about deploying the "largest navy ever assembled in the history of South America." Although the White House maintains the operation targets drug trafficking networks, US forces have already commandeered two oil tankers and are currently pursuing a third vessel.
Caracas announced Saturday that Iran has similarly extended assistance to "confront piracy" by American forces. Iran's Foreign Ministry urged the global community to "firmly oppose" the blockade, condemning the US vessel seizures as unlawful and unilateral actions.
Trump has declared the blockade will continue until Caracas returns "all assets" he alleges were taken from the United States.
Venezuela has fired back by characterizing the seizures as "state-sponsored piracy" and has petitioned the UN Security Council to officially denounce the operations to safeguard international navigation security.
