Venezuela Denounces US Seizure of Oil Tanker
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry condemned what it called the “theft and hijacking” of a privately owned vessel carrying Venezuelan crude in international waters. The ministry further alleged that US military forces were responsible for the “forced disappearance” of the ship’s crew.
Officials in Caracas insisted the incident was not isolated, but rather part of a “colonialist model” that Washington is attempting to impose in order to undermine Venezuela’s sovereignty and exploit its natural resources. The government pledged to seek accountability through global institutions, including the UN Security Council, warning that those involved would ultimately be judged by “justice and history.”
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed earlier on Saturday that US forces had seized the tanker during a predawn mission, describing the action as enforcement against Venezuelan oil shipments. The development follows President Donald Trump’s recent order for a “total and complete” blockade of “sanctioned” vessels entering or leaving Venezuela.
