Brazilian’s leader criticizes Trump over imposing additional tariffs
Trump warned on social media that the US would impose an additional 10% tariff on any nation siding with what he called the “Anti-American policies of BRICS,” a coalition that includes Russia, China, Brazil, India, and South Africa. His comments came as the BRICS summit concluded in Rio de Janeiro.
Addressing reporters after the summit, Lula said, “I don’t think it’s responsible or serious for the president of a country as large as the United States to be threatening the world over the internet.” He emphasized that the global landscape has changed and stated firmly, “We don’t want an emperor. We are sovereign nations. If he believes he can impose tariffs, then we have the right to respond with tariffs of our own.”
Lula stressed that international relations must be grounded in mutual respect and clarified, “And people need to understand what sovereignty truly means. Each country is the master of its own destiny.”
He also pushed back against Trump’s public backing of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently on trial over allegations of trying to overturn the 2022 election results. Lula declared, “we won’t accept interference or instruction from anyone. We have solid and independent institutions.”
For years, BRICS nations have been exploring ways to boost the use of their own currencies in trade and to create payment systems that reduce dependence on the US dollar.
